A three compartment solar formic acid generator was built using a Sn on Cu foam cathode and NiFe anode. bipolar combination of Fumasep FAD-PET-75 Nafion 117 membrane mounted between anode middle compartment, which filled with Amberlyst 15H ion exchanger beads. separated the from cathode. The powered photovoltaic panel fed gaseous CO 2 water. Diluted solution produced by flowing water through compartment. Common PV-EC devices are operated aqueous electrolyte produce formate. In our device, is straight away, avoiding need for downstream operations to convert formate acid. electrolyser matched cells achieving coupling efficiency as high 95%. Our device produces at faradaic ca. 31% solar-to-formic 2%. By producing without any additional chemicals this concept attractive use remote locations abundant energy. Formic serves liquid renewable fuel or chemical building block.
